Why do you sew?
For me, sewing is more than a hobby – it’s the way that I practice self-care. Becoming a mom to two beautiful (yet busy and active children) while working a full-time job, means that it’s easy to put myself last. Sewing, as well as the corresponding community, is a constant reminder to take time to do something that challenges me, yet is so satisfying!
How did you start – and what’s the first thing you sewed (and fit) to your body?
I tell this story on my blog, but I actually purchased a sewing machine when’s husband and I had just purchased a home and I learned just how expensive patio furniture is! In particular, I was struck by how expensive the chair cushion covers were (they made the set ~$200 more expensive!). I decided I could DIY it for cheaper – and walked into Walmart and purchased the cheapest machine I could that had a buttonhole foot on it and the rest is a bit of history! I have frugality to blame for finding my passion!
What fitting techniques intimidate you most?
Assuming that I can’t just use some blanket non committal response like “all of them,” I would have to say all things pant related! Crotch length and curve, pant wrinkles, hip dips, thin thighs – alllllllll of the things keep me up at night! But I’m sure I’m in good company right now!!
What are your measurements and how would you describe your body type?
My measurements are: 32.5” high bust, 35” bust, 30” waist and 35” hips. At just about 5’2.5” I have to make length adjustments mostly in my torso as my legs are long for my height.
What fitting alterations do you typically need to make?
I typically remove 2” throughout the bodice of my tops 1/2” at armscye level and the other 1.5” at the waist. I can also use a forward thrust shoulder and swayback adjustment – much like my friend Katie!
What’s your personal style motto?
Casual, comfy and ready for it all! I like to dress up for work, but I also work virtually and it’s hard to get past lounge clothes (who am I kidding – I mean pajamas) on those days!
When I’m not making, you can catch me shopping at… (fill-in the blank)!
Practically speaking – Target (it’s a one stop way to shop) – though the brands I typically browse are mostly J. Crew and Anthropologie.
Why did you join the Sew Altered Style team?
I can’t believe that just about 2.5 years into this sewing journey I have the opportunity to help create something bigger than a place to just share what I make! I’m thrilled that Katie picked up the phone on that fated day in early 2017 – and am thrilled to be building this site while launching it!
