If you’ve been sewing in the indie world for any amount of time, you undoubtedly have heard of Spoonflower. Maybe you’ve even used some of their fabric. And if you haven’t heard of Spoonflower, they are an amazing company that custom prints hundreds of unique designs on a variety of fabric substrates. Pretty cool, huh?
Well, Spoonflower recently released a denim line — Dogwood Denim — and asked if we’d like to try it out! With a sewing workshop and a 2-week trial looming over my head, I decided I didn’t have enough going on and agreed to sew up a couple of yards of the new denim…
At 11 ounces, this denim is most appropriate for home dec or bag sewing. And if you’ve followed this space for a while, you’ve likely picked up on the fact that neither Mac or I do much home dec or bag sewing. In fact, I can count on one hand the number of bags I’ve made in my sewing career, and I’ve done even fewer home dec projects…
But I did need a new swim bag big enough to carry all our swim gear. My kids take swim lessons year round, which means that every Thursday evening we schlep it on over to the indoor pool with a variety of bags in tow. How nice would it be, I thought, to consolidate all of those bags into a single, giant bag?
So that’s just what I did! This bag is huge! It easily fits a whole stack of beach towels lying flat, along with suits, goggles, shower stuff, and swim toys. Eventually I hope to do a tutorial for this bag since I pretty much just winged it, but today is about the fabric.
The choices on Spoonflower was almost overwhelming, but I ended up choosing the Modern Aztec design after much hemming and hawing. I knew I wanted something neutral so my husband wouldn’t mind carrying the bag around. And I had to narrow down the choices or risk decision overload, so I just decided to limit myself to southwest geometrics.
We love this Aztec design! It’s fun and modern, but neutral enough that we both love carrying this bag. The denim is fairly heavy duty, making it perfect for bagmaking.
The jury is still out on the Dogwood Denim for apparel, but it is perfect for a fun printed bag like this one.
